Portugal Orders Worldcoin to Stop Collecting Biometric Data for 3 Months
Authorities in Portugal have ordered Worldcoin, a blockchain company, to halt its collection of personal data for a period of 90 days.
This decision comes after similar actions taken by authorities in neighboring Spain, as well as ongoing investigations by regulatory bodies in South Korea and Hong Kong.
According to a document, the Portuguese regulator expressed concern about the risk of violating citizens’ data protection rights and deemed urgent intervention necessary in order to prevent serious harm.
The company has reportedly collected biometric data from over 300,000 individuals. The regulatory body has received numerous complaints regarding Worldcoin’s activities, including unauthorized data collection from minors, inadequate disclosure of information about the service, and the lack of an option to revoke consent for providing personal information.
