Belgium Will Foster Blockchain Use During EU Presidency
According to local media, the Belgian authorities, who will assume the presidency of the EU Council as of January 1, have announced their intention to develop an international blockchain network.
This was communicated by Minister of Digitalization Mathieu Michel. The focus will be on using blockchain technology for the mutual recognition of qualifications, driver’s licenses, and property rights, as well as for tracking documents and financing small and medium-sized businesses within the eurozone.
To achieve this, Michel is advocating for the revamp of the European Blockchain Services Infrastructure (EBSI), originally created in 2018 under the name Europeum and based in Belgium.
The minister emphasized that the project will also support the digital euro and provide the foundation for the development of digital twins of cities, helping, for example, to predict the risk of floods.
“From a security, transparency, and privacy perspective, blockchain has the potential to empower citizens to take control of their own data,” Michel stated.
