OneCoin Former Compliance Head Pleads Guilty
Irina Dilkinska, the former leader of OneCoin’s legal department and compliance team, has admitted guilt to charges of fraud and money laundering.
She could face a penalty of up to 10 years in prison for the two offenses.
It has been alleged that Dilkinska was instrumental in the money laundering activities of OneCoin, facilitating the transfer of $110 million in illegal profits to an organization in the Cayman Islands.
In a statement, the Justice Department stated that Dilkinska helped to launder millions of dollars earned through OneCoin’s multi-level marketing scheme.
In March, the 42-year-old Bulgarian citizen was extradited to the US, where she faced multiple charges that could result in up to 40 years in prison.
OneCoin, which was founded in 2014 by Ruja Ignatova and Sebastian Greenwood, claimed to be a highly profitable cryptocurrency.
Investors were promised profits not only from the appreciation of the digital asset, but also from recruiting new members into the scheme.
Since 2017, Ignatova’s whereabouts have been unknown. In 2022, Europol included her on their list of most wanted criminals (although she is not currently listed), and she has also been included on the FBI’s list.
