Tether has announced plans to introduce its flagship product USDT to the world’s largest cryptocurrency, Bitcoin, through the Lightning Network.

The integration will be facilitated by Taproot Assets, a network that promotes interoperability between stablecoins and other assets on the Bitcoin blockchain.

The development team behind the Lightning Network, Lightning Labs, will be responsible for implementing Taproot Assets.

According to Tether, this integration will revolutionize the role of stablecoins in the Bitcoin ecosystem by combining the multiple layers of security and decentralization offered by Bitcoin with the speed and scalability of the Lightning Network.

During the Plan B conference in San Salvador, Tether CEO Paolo Ardoino emphasized that bringing USDT to Bitcoin and Lightning will provide practical solutions for remittances, payments, and other financial functions that require both speed and reliability.

Once fully integrated, USDt will operate seamlessly on both the base layer of Bitcoin and its second layer Lightning Network. This will enable fast and cost-effective transactions, while also harnessing the scalability and strong security of the Bitcoin blockchain.
