Bitfinex’s CTO: Our Database Was Not Hacked
Bitfinex’s CTO, Paolo Ardoino, has expressed doubt regarding reports of a potential leak of user data from their cryptocurrency exchange.
The alleged hackers, known as FSOCIETY, had announced that they had successfully hacked Bitfinex and acquired 2.5 TB of users’ personal information.
They also demanded a ransom to prevent the release of this data within a week. However, Ardoino stated that only 5,000 out of the 22,500 email addresses in the sample data provided by the hackers matched with Bitfinex users and that they do not store passwords or 2FA information in plain text.
He also clarified that the hackers have not contacted Bitfinex demanding a ransom. Ardoino also shared a post from an unnamed cybersecurity researcher who claimed that this could be a ploy by the alleged hackers to advertise their hacking tools.
