US Senators Say Iranian Crypto Miners Pose a Potential National Security Threat
In their letter, Senators Elizabeth Warren and Angus King expressed concern about potential security risks posed by cryptocurrency miners in Iran.
They wrote to National Security Advisor Jake Sullivan, Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin, and Treasury Secretary Janet Yellen, urging the Biden administration to look into possible ties between the Iranian government and local crypto miners.
The lawmakers emphasized the need for information about how digital assets could be used to bypass US sanctions, as Iran has reportedly used funds from crypto mining to support terrorist organizations and recently carried out an attack on Israel.
The Senators highlighted the threat to national security and called for action before Iran further utilizes crypto to fund attacks against Israel.
They requested data on the revenue of crypto miners in Iran and the potential for money laundering, as well as the government’s response to address these threats.
