Norway to Limit Bitcoin Mining

According to the Norwegian government, cryptocurrency mining will no longer be accepted as a desirable activity in the country.

In an effort to regulate the data center industry, the Ministry of Digitalization, led by Karianne Tung, plans to introduce a new law.

This will require businesses to register and disclose information about their services and those behind the operations. The Energy Minister, Terje Aasland, emphasized the importance of socially beneficial projects that are integral to infrastructure.

The goal is to control unwanted cryptocurrency mining activities that contribute to greenhouse gas emissions and an unregulated industry with no oversight. Tung and Aasland stated that while the data center industry is still welcomed in the country, the government wants to have more control.

They also mentioned that they are not interested in actors who solely seek to profit from cheap electricity, and any cases will be decided by local authorities.
