China Warns About Fake Digital Yuan App on WeChat
A fraudulent digital yuan app was recently discovered by the Chinese Ministry of Industry and Information Technology, according to a post on WeChat.
While the app looks similar to the official version, there are small discrepancies that set it apart.
Aside from promising fake returns, the counterfeit app also collects sensitive user information and offers fake customer service that directs users to unfamiliar social tools to steal their funds, the ministry reported.
The phony app uses a slightly different logo and interface, but is comparable to the real one. It also has a different name, version number, and MD5 identity compared to the authentic app.
It is unclear who is responsible for the scam or what actions will be taken to stop it. Attempts to locate the fake app on Apple or Google’s app stores were unsuccessful.
