Greenpeace USA Criticizes Bitcoin ETFs Approval in US
Greenpeace has denounced the US Securities and Exchange Commission’s decision to approve spot Bitcoin ETFs.
On January 11, the SEC gave the green light for Bitwise, Grayscale, Hashdex, BlackRock, Valkyrie, BZX, Invesco, VanEck, WisdomTree, Fidelity, and Franklin Templeton to launch the instrument.
However, Greenpeace believes this is a victory for Wall Street but a loss for the environment and society.
In a statement, the organization expressed concerns about the negative impact of Bitcoin mining on carbon emissions and the fight against the climate crisis.
It urged major financial institutions like BlackRock and Fidelity, who invest in Bitcoin, to take an active role in addressing this issue.
According to Greenpeace, as the price of Bitcoin continues to rise, so does its environmental impact, as mining requires a significant amount of electricity, most of which comes from fossil fuels.
