Scammers Stole $300M from Users in 2023
In 2023, over 324,000 crypto users experienced losses totaling approximately $295 million due to phishing scams, specifically from wallet drainers, as detailed in Scam Sniffer’s “2023 Wallet Drainers Report.”
The report highlights a persistent increase in phishing activities throughout the year. Even with the closure of certain drainers, Scam Sniffer noted that “phishing gangs” seamlessly shift operations to other platforms, indicating a constant supply of services for scammers.
Notably, on March 2, the notorious Monkey Drainer, responsible for significant phishing exploits, ceased operations but directed its criminal clientele to an alternative scam service.
Monkey Drainer is estimated to have stolen around $16 million before shutting down. Similarly, Inferno Drainer, after pilfering approximately $81 million in digital assets, closed in 2023, and Angel Drainer emerged as its successor, according to Scam Sniffer.
