Bankrupt Bitcoin ATM Operator Coin Cloud is Hacked
A group of unidentified hackers claims to have acquired 70,000 personal photos and sensitive data belonging to 300,000 customers of the Coin Cloud Bitcoin ATMs.
The cybercriminals also assert to have obtained the code for the internal Coin Cloud system and are planning to publicly disclose the leak in the near future.
The messages from the attackers include altered images allegedly taken from customers’ selfies, as well as their personal details such as name, address, date of birth, occupation, phone number, and social security number.
The operator of the Bitcoin ATMs has not released any statements regarding the incident. It is worth noting that in February 2023, Coin Cloud, which operated over 4,000 ATMs in the US and Brazil, declared bankruptcy due to “business challenges and legal issues.”
The company’s debts to approximately 10,000 business partners are estimated to be between $100 million and $500 million.
