ZachXBT, a researcher specializing in on-chain analysis uncovered an additional $37 million stolen in a heist of the cryptocurrency payment provider Alphapo.

This amount was on top of the previously reported sum, bringing up the amount stolen to a total of $60 million.

The North Korean-backed hackers, the Lazarus Group, were responsible according to ZachXBT, due to the “clear fingerprint” they left behind on the network. Bitcoin, Tron and Ethereum networks were affected.

The Alphapo address managed transactions for the online gambling sites of HypeDrop, Bovada and Ignition, which saw the bulk of the funds taken from them.

As the hot protocol wallets were connected to the internet, the attackers managed to gain access more easily. To prevent further damage and possible losses, multiple platforms have temporarily suspended withdrawals.

The stolen funds were then tracked by DeFoi experts and found to have been converted to ETH before being diverted through the Bitcoin and Avalanche networks.

It is believed the cause of heist could have been due to the leak of private keys. This July also saw $1.5 million taken from the Rodeo Finance DeFi protocol via manipulation of the digital oracle.
