A SIM Swaper Will Pay $22M to Crypto Investor Michael Turpin
A SIM swaper has agreed to pay $22 million to crypto investor Michael Turpin.
The hack took place in 2018 and included a complex scheme to spoof an AT&T SIM card. As a result, Turpin lost $24 million in digital assets.
At the time of the incident, the hacker, nicknamed “Baby Al Capone”, was 15 years old and was still in high school. He admitted his direct involvement in the SIM swap.
Turpin’s attorney has said he was confident that AT&T would take responsibility for the security failure that led to the hack after the information was received.
A California court dismissed in 2020 Turpin’s $200 million complaint against the telecommunications company.
